- Robert A.M. Stern Architects,New York, N.Y. - Assistant Project Architect - 1982/83

Design Development of Residential, Institutional and Commercial projects including design competitions.

- Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA), Estoril,Lisbon. – Technical Director - 1983/86

Master Plan conception, execution and implementation, including technical facilities and infra-structures, paddock area lay-out, access roads and walkways, pedestrian circulation and access to grandstands, public services and sanitary facilities; parking lots;

Chief Security Officer at F1 G.P. of Portugal (Estoril) and Brasil (Rio Janeiro).

- Ziegler Kirven Parrish Architects (ZKPA), Los Angeles, CA. – Project Architect - 1984/88

U.S. Marine Corps Naval Base in Twenty Nine Palms,California. Project comprising several new buildings budgeted at over US$ 12 million, including ’clean rooms,’ ‘radio frequency shielding,’ and other high-tech sophisticated and complex technical infrastructures. Implementation of the ‘Ready-Check’ system to control coordination and compatibility of Architectural/Engineering projects.

- Atlantic Company Turismo e Urbanizaçäo S.A.,Lisbon – Technical Director - 1988/92

Conception, development, coordination and execution of a large scale touristic and residential development project for 18,000 beds at ‘Herdade da Comporta’, an ocean front estate located an hour away from Lisbon and owned by the Espírito Santo Group (GES). The property, over two thousand five hundred acres, is a young pine forest sitting on a soft rolling sand dune with a one mile beach front. Multi-disciplinary team leader and technical supervisor and coordinator; legal approvals/permits in record time.

MGS Architects is a small architectural design office. In the past twenty years the practice has designed over two hundred and fifty projects ranging from: large scale industrial factories and control rooms and pharmaceutical laboratories (approved by FDA), with natural lighting/ventilation design solutions; to large scale multi use projects, resort developments, k-12 schools, health clinics, residential and housing units, commercial malls, supermarkets and restaurants, sports and fitness facilities; to single family residences; located in Europe, Asia and North America.

MGS has also been responsible for the design of five major facilities for the practice at all levels of competition sailing; this has brought to the practice solid knowledge of Yacht Club design and successfull management implementation systems.

since 1999, the office is online wherever we happen to be working, not anymore at a specific physical location.

This allows total freedom and flexibility to respond to our clients’ needs and the projects’ requirements.

Introduction to MGS Architects

The office is divided into three groups: 1. design, 2. presentation and submissions 3. production, linked, coordinated and delivered via the web.

In Portugal MGS has been responsible for construction, on several residential projects, for project management and administration, to ensure high quality standards, and a full implementation of, and compliance to, the design. This has included architecture, engineering, feng shui, interior design and decoration and also landscaping, exterior pools and garden design. The result has been translated into more value to the client, for considerably lower costs; total transparency to the owner, and a more efficient end result.

‘The process consists of listening attentively to our clients’ requirements, adding value through sound design ideas and implementation; excellent design adds substantial quality of life to people and our experience is that it doesn´t necessarily have to cost more’

CLUBE NAVAL DE CASCAIS

This narrow and longitudinal building houses several complimentary uses related to all levels practice of sailing, as well as the technical facilities to organize world class sailing events and yet other facilities required for large social gatherings, and common to a family or country club

it is comprised of a series of communicating buildings each destined to its specific use, all in western red cedar wood, working on two levels in conjunction or independently from one another, depending on functional demands for each use. maintenance is minimal, particularly in the presence of salt water

the exterior dock area parks the many hundreds of sailing dinghies that usually attend major ISAF international regattas and world championships

Cais do Carvão is the oldest standing maritime structure in Madeira. The old coal warehouse burnt decades ago, but the walls are structurally sound

the concept is to create a nautical access point to the ocean, between the Lido and the Yacht Club, by repairing the old quay, amplifying the dock and construct a new ocean access ramp, flanked by a vertical steel structure warehouse bracing the stone walls. this new warehouse will store dinghies and small craft. on it's roof, we have placed a large glulam waterproof wooden structure in the evocative shape of a whale, building which will house a pocket theatre/conference room, art display galleries and a large ocean deck coffee shop

this seventeen hectare property was the remote site for an EDP Sub-Station

the program was to maximize profit for this parcel, particularly due to it's proximity to new roadways/infrastructures being developed. so i read in great degree of detail all the legal and municipal restrictions and specific/applicable guidelines for each of the three allowed uses and conceived a mixed use project with an office park with commercial shops and restaurants at street level, two levels of parking underground, defining two proposed twin exterior public plazas, creating an identity to this remote and obsolete site, now invigorated by a new urban and infrastructural fabric

on the west flanking hillside, we placed over a dozen twin townhouse residential units with private gardens and the overall property went up in value ten fold, the client was happy and the municipality also showed interest in acquiring several units for their local social services

the architectural language was defined as simple ergonomic and proportioned, creating new urban space for social and recreational uses on public space at ground level with a back drop of stunning panoramic views of the atlantic ocean in the horizon

URBAN GARDENS REVOLUTION

the concept is to revolutionize hard core medium and high density suburban residential neighborhoods via a simple idea:

it consists of covering exterior vehicular parking areas with light weight waterproof structures over which we create emf free, earthed gardens, rain water collection and purification, solar/pv/aeolic energy collection on building roofs, horticulture and social/recreational functions, bringing people and children together again in their own neighborhoods, a vital social role to our peaceful living as communities

what i consider astounding about this idea is that when we googlearth these suburban areas, common all over the planet, the existing vehicular parking areas take up almost all the exterior space left over from the high-rise buildings and the roadways, which means that, with the implementation of this idea, the proposed green/earthed garden areas will occupy the same equivalent area, the parked automobiles staying in the same exact place as before, but becoming second graded to a sort of naturally lit basement on street level with a garden above

financing such an endeavor by communities will not represent a large individual investment per family, less than the purchase of a new car, whilst the results are far reaching and beyond strict economic and temporal scope. this green revolution brings water and nutritional self-sufficiency to communities
